If you haven’t been to the field in the last 2 weeks, you haven’t seen the latest changes. The first phase of a major drainage project is complete. Five surface drains open into more than 1100 feet of 12 inch plastic pipe buried in gravel running from approximately abeam Ed Robertson’s driveway East and empty down the East end of the runway abeam Gene Deutch’s house. The surface drains are to accommodate surface runoff and the below grade gravel path is to act as a conduit for underground water. The intent is to protect the asphalt road from damage which is occurring due to water running across it and water standing on it in places, and to dry out at least the North part of the runway. Only time will tell how successful this is, although the gravel started draining subsurface water immediately. Phase 2 in the Spring will be to level the surface above the ditch excavation and put it back like it was before with grass.
Until phase 2 is completed and we once again have level grass, we will have the following operational limitations:
1) All airplanes will enter/exit the runway West of the ditch end by Ed Robertson’s driveway.
2) If ground is dry/firm, gliders may be towed by cart to/from the runway at the level/sodded portion across from the clubhouse, or will enter/exit at West end.
3) Minimize traffic crossing opposite clubhouse to prevent damage to seeded area.
These procedures will impose some inconvenience, but are necessary to help the crossing area opposite the clubhouse to recover as a smooth solid grassy surface.
